When designing indoor or outdoor illuminated displays, there are many types of Christmas lights to choose from. Use this guide to determine which light is best for your decoration plan.

LED and incandescent
Although both LEDs and incandescent lights come in a variety of colors and bulb shapes, there are some basic differences between them.

Incandescent
Cost is usually lower than LED
Have a warm glow

LED lights
Uses less energy than incandescent bulbs
More durable; some LEDs are rated for up to 100,000 hours
Burns at lower temperatures
Available in both warm and cold light

Types of Christmas lights

Mini light string
These lights have smaller bulbs and have been popular for decades.

Wide Angle LED Mini Light
They have a low-profile conical bulb that emits more light than some varieties of bulbs, and blends seamlessly into the surroundings when not in use.

Big bulb light
The large bulbs (also known as C5, C7, C9 and G40) create a visual impact and bring a retro feel.

Battery-powered lights
They are ideal for displays that are not used near a power source or where the cord is unsafe.

Animation and color changing lights
These lights add a striking effect to your holiday display.

Net light
The clear light has been strung into various forms, and you can easily get a uniform look when you hang them on a bush or building.

Icicle light
These lights give your home a whimsical snowy look. For more creative decoration ideas, see "Christmas Decorations."

LED ceiling light
They are ideal for outlining doorways, windows and sidewalks as well as creating complex shapes and designs.

LED Flood Light
These spotlights require no installation and are a time-saving alternative to traditional string lights. Just plug them into an outlet, point them anywhere (indoor Christmas tree, outdoor tree or house) and instantly project bright colors or patterns.

How much light is needed to cover the area?
Tree branches wrapped in string lights.
Although personal preference is the ultimate determinant, here are some basic considerations:

Bulb spacing: Multiple strings of Christmas lights that leave more space between the bulbs are perfect for wrapping slender columns and branches. Steel strands with a small spacing between the bulbs are usually best suited to hang loosely around indoor trees or to line a roof or cantilever.
String length: If the distance between the bulbs is different, the length of two strings with the same number of lights will also be different.
Outdoor trees
General rule: For heavy lighting, plan about 200 mini Christmas tree lights at half a foot vertically per tree. If you like mid-light lighting, 100 mini lights per foot is enough.

Other tricks

Slim trees will require minimal light.
Dense evergreen trees, such as pine, fir and spruce, may require more light. Consider using a larger bulb.
By wrapping bushes and bushes with net lights or icicle lights, you can cover a larger area with less twisted wires and less work.
When covering tree branches, use a light with a spacing of 6 to 8 inches between the bulbs so that the wires can be tightly wrapped.

Indoor christmas tree
General rule: Plan about 100 mini Christmas tree lights for each vertical half-foot tree.

Other tricks

Strands with a 4-inch pitch will illuminate more areas at a lower cost.
Steel strands with a bulb pitch of 6 to 8 inches are best for tightly wrapping tree branches.
Consider buying additional Christmas lights just in case your demand exceeds expectations or is used as a substitute.

Choose the right color

Some people have a strong preference for colored or white Christmas lights. Here are some things to keep in mind:

White Christmas lights have a timeless appearance, while colored lights are full of joy and festive atmosphere. In addition, you can coordinate them to create complex designs.
Not all white LED lights have the same hue. Some glow warm yellow, while others glow blue.
You can color large areas with monochrome lines for dramatic effects.
Get kids involved and allow them to cover designated areas with a color scheme of their choice.

Energy saving
Consider the following tips to save your electricity bill during holidays:

Use the automatic timer to turn the lighting display off and on.
Choose LED Christmas lights over incandescent lights, especially when lighting a large area.
Use extension cords to extend the harness in hidden areas. See Power cord safety tips.
Christmas lights and extension cords have different current levels. Always pair products of equal amp capacity.
